Cork Weather: Met Eireann issues new yellow rain warning as Christmas Day approaches

It’s bad news for any little ones expecting bikes, spinners and scooters from Santa this year – Christmas is set to bring torrential rain to many parts of Cork as the Met Eireann updates its yellow rain warning this morning.

Instead of a white Christmas, Rebel County and our South Coast will have a wet Christmas, with the kind of conditions that will keep us all indoors (still, more time with turkey and ham).

The National Weather Service has issued a new yellow rain warning this morning (5.35 a.m.) that is in effect until 6 a.m. tomorrow.

It will bring the following day and night: «Several bands of heavy rain will result in accumulations of 30-50 mm, with potentially higher totals in mountainous areas.»

«This could result in localized flooding and dangerous driving conditions.»

Looking ahead – while the Met Eireann says the weekend forecast remains «uncertain», it appears wet, brutal and windy weather will continue across Munster into Christmas Day and beyond.

One bright spot – if you need to do some last-minute shopping, tomorrow should be dry from mid-morning to late afternoon and into the evening, and we might get some patches of clear skies.

Christmas Eve (Friday) should also bring us dry, perhaps bright weather from mid-morning to early afternoon in Cork City – perfect for the last and last-minute madness rush of food and gifts.

But the later period on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day will bring heavy rain and showers in some places, although it will be relatively mild with high daytime temperatures between 9 and 11 degrees.

The detailed forecast for Monster are:

tonight

More heavy rain overnight, with clearance moving by morning. The lowest temperatures are 9 or 10 degrees. Winds will be southeasterly moderate, deviating to northwesterly moderate speed with rain.

Tomorrow – Thursday 23 December

It rises across the county Thursday morning, to give a day of sunny spells and scattered showers. Relatively mild with maximum temperatures of 12 or 13 degrees accompanied by moderate southwesterly winds.

national view

Low pressure will dominate our weather in the lead-up to Christmas, bringing in some cool, humid conditions. It turns milder for a while, too.

Christmas Eve (Fri): Outbreaks of rain will slowly spread north on Friday, reaching Ulster by evening. Clearer and brighter conditions will move west and south during the afternoon, although patches of light rain and drizzle will still be present. The highest temperatures are from 8 to 11 degrees, mostly southeasterly moderate winds.

Christmas Day (Saturday): Generally cloudy with a light breeze with rain, the heaviest in the southeast.

Saint Stephen’s Day (Sunday): With the rain still continuing in most of the country, rainfall will become uneven later in the day.

It also turns colder in the north with the highest temperatures 3 to 5 degrees there. Elevations from 6 to 10 degrees south. The easterly winds drop during the day.
