Wimbledon quarter-finalist Marton Vosovic responded to Novak Djokovic’s exemption from vaccination by saying he did not believe the Serbian had the right to play in the Australian Open.
Speaking to Hungarian outlet M4Sport, Marton Fukowicz said: «People’s health is of paramount importance, and there are rules that were set out months ago, that everyone should vaccinate themselves – and Djokovic did not.
«From that point of view, I don’t think he would have the right to be here.»
The Hungarian world number 38, who lost to Djokovic in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year and at the Paris Masters in November, said he was not the only one who thought it was unfair for Djokovic to play in the Grand Slam despite not having been vaccinated.
The 29-year-old told M4Sport that news of the world number one exemption was received negatively among many tennis players.
While it is not yet clear whether Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke will cancel Djokovic’s visa for a second time, questions have emerged about an advertisement form the player submitted to travel to Australia.
In the form, submitted on January 1, Djokovic answered “no” to the question: “Have you traveled, or will you travel, within the 14 days prior to your trip to Australia?”.
Djokovic traveled to Melbourne from Spain on January 4, but appeared in photos posted on social media by journalist Jose Morgado from Belgrade on Christmas Day.
The Australian Federal Court released the document on Monday. In an affidavit Djokovic gave to the court, he said he had «authorized» his agent to submit a travel authorization form.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke with his Serbian counterpart about Djokovic’s situation and explained Australia’s «non-discriminatory border policy».
«The Prime Minister had a constructive call with Prime Minister Barnabec this morning in Novak Djokovic,» a statement from the Australian Prime Minister’s Office said.
The Prime Minister explained our non-discriminatory border policy and its role in protecting Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two sides agreed to keep in touch on this issue, and further promote bilateral relations.
