The Romanian vaccine deal is finally complete, and 700,000 doses will be delivered next month

Ireland has finally completed a deal to secure 700,000 Pfizer/BioNtech Covid-19 vaccines from Romania, Taoiseach confirmed.

Michel Martin said the arrangement was «great news and a welcome boost to our offering, which continues to have great support and uptake from the Irish public».

«The new Pfizer vaccines will ensure this supply as we continue the next phases of roll-out during the summer and fall months,» Martin added.

I would like to thank Romania and the European Union for their help and showing their solidarity with Ireland as we continue to protect our citizens in this pandemic.

Health Secretary Stephen Donnelly said the doses will be delivered throughout August and «will allow us to continue to ramp up the roll-out of the vaccination programme.»

Confirmation of the deal for 700,000 comes after last month The government announced plans To buy up to one million vaccines from Romania.

Martin held talks with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in early July, and it was agreed in principle to buy 1 million vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna.

Last week, it was confirmed that the Covid-19 vaccination program would be extended to people aged 12 to 15.

The latest vaccine statistics show that more than 5.9 million doses have been administered in Ireland.

As of last night, more than 3.1 million people had received at least one dose and more than 2.5 million people had received two doses. A total of 217,000 Janssen vaccines have also received a single shot.

The number of people in hospital with Covid-19 is currently 177, including 27 patients in intensive care units.
