A six-year-old girl has died and her father was injured after a crash last night in Stoke-on-Trent.
Emergency services were called for the tragedy in Norton Green at about 7.15 p.m.
Despite the frantic efforts of passersby, the girl was declared dead at the scene.
She was walking with her father, who is being treated for his injuries.
Police said in a statement that the driver was hit in the head in the accident.
Inspector Lee Robinson, of Staffordshire Police, said: «We do not fully understand what has happened, so I would urge people to avoid the area during the investigation and please do not speculate on the circumstances.
“However, I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage to contact us and help with our inquiries.
«The girl’s family will be supported by specially trained officers and our thoughts are with them at this time.»
Today, flowers are laid on the scene of the tragedy.
Police said in a statement: «We are appealing to witnesses to the incident that occurred at approximately 7:15pm on Endon Street.
The girl and her father were reportedly hit by a car while they were walking along Indon Road.
Despite the best efforts of bystanders, the six-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.”
